The homeowners were moving back to Ireland after ten years living abroad. They had a very clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. Working closely with the architect, a Passivhaus designer, they wanted to create a modern, highly energy-efficient and sustainable family home for themselves and their three children. Warranties and performance were important. The choice of Internorm’s internal timber options and unlimited colours for the external aluminium cladding beautifully complemented the materials and colour palette of their stylish, natural interior design choices.
Getting Planning Permission for Selfbuild in Ireland
There was no previous structure on the land, and they had to go through a rigorous planning process. “The build was not straightforward. There are complexities within the build that enabled us to have such features as the frameless glass-to-glass corner window and the sheer amount of glazing to the rear of the house.” By working closely with the architect and Internorm partner Interlux Systems, they were able to achieve exactly what they were looking for and create a beautiful, calm family home where the large areas of glazing take centre stage within this modern, sustainable architecture. Built to Passivhaus standard, the architect placed the building in such a way to maximise solar gain in winter and avoid overheating in summer.
